The *New* Model Of Team Building

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted to the blog and whenever that happens I always get a lot of people asking me what the next big project is that we’re cooking up.

They insist there MUST be some master plan unfolding for worldwide internet domination, right??

I’ll admit, I have been somewhat “undercover” lately…

(And we DO have some “top secret” projects coming up that I think are going to change the game of network marketing…)

But it hasn’t been ALL work and no play :-)

You see, we just wrapped up the final session of our Renegade Breakthrough Group Mentoring Program a couple weeks ago and one of the things I talked about was the need to “pause, reflect and refresh.”

Our team literally dumped EVERYTHING we’ve learned over the past few years about building a multi-million dollar business into this program.

And for many of the students who participated, it was the most intense and transformational experience of their lives.

I’ve never poured more into any program or course before and after we ended our last call my husband Brian and I took off for a relaxing 5 day retreat in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

A lot of our friends were wondering if we’d head out to an island with palm trees somewhere, but I actually like to keep things pretty simple most of the time.

And that means a quiet, Victorian village hidden deep in the Ozark Mountains… with some of the best spas in the world :-)

(And if you told me you never knew there were mountains in the Midwest you wouldn’t be the first one!)

While we were there I did some serious reflection on my own business and how my life has changed radically since I started online.

I thought about everything I’ve been able to accomplish over the past few years, all the incredible opportunities ahead, AND the areas I need to improve on.

I also thought a lot about YOU and some of the things that might be holding you back from making your dreams a reality.

Here’s one of the biggest things I see standing between many people and the success they’re looking for:

Themselves!

Sometimes building a business online can feel a lot like trying to drink water from a fire hydrant!

I mean, who can keep up with it all:

-Twitter
-Youtube
-Blogging
-Pay-per-click
-Lead capture pages
-Facebook
-Content creation
-Writing emails
-Copywriting
-Following up with prospects

Make no mistake about it: If you’re just getting started, you are going to need to spend time learning some of these new skills yourself.

And that’s OKAY.

Because you only need to do a FEW of them well in order to begin making money online.

But once your business starts growing and you’re ready to take it to the next level, you could become your own biggest limitation.

You see, despite the fact that I’ve become well known for creating marketing systems that attract prospects and customers…

The people who know me best know that I consider my TRUE  talent to be TEAM BUILDING.

If you’ve read a few online sales letters you might have gotten the impression that building a team was outdated, right along with making a names list and passing out fliers :-)

But the truth is, it’s more important today than ever and it’s a skill that ALL the “gurus” rely on.

Without exception.

The *NEW* Model Of Team Building

Now, when most network marketers think of building a team they think of building a downline.

This is one form of team building but it’s not the only way.

There’s a new model that’s developed because of the internet.

In the past, making money with network marketing meant having A LOT of people on your team (ie – your downline) all doing A LITTLE BIT of the same thing:

Talking to friends, inviting people to meetings, etc.

The idea was for each person to talk to just a couple new people every day about the business, thereby filling your funnel with hundreds and even thousands of prospects a month.

This is where the saying “1% of the efforts of 100 people rather than 100% of your own” became so popular.

What’s happened as a result of the internet though is that it’s now become possible for one person (or… a very small team of people working together) to do what used to take hundreds of distributors to do.

Faster, easier and cheaper.

Specialization Is The New “Duplication”

What’s also happened in this new internet model is that people are developing specialized business-building skills.

(Honing your business and marketing skills has ALWAYS been mandatory to success in network marketing, it’s just that with the internet there are more options)

Some people are highly skilled at traffic generation and creating content.

Others at writing persuasive ads.

Others at sponsoring and recruiting.

But the people who are profiting the most online are the ones who are collaborating and forming “partnerships” with others to grow their business together.

When I first started building my “home team” I needed someone to help me answer the phone and follow up with all the prospects that were calling me.

As I continued to grow I needed help managing my pay-per-click campaigns, and then someone to help me write more emails, and so on.

By doing so I was able to really focus on becoming good at one or two things, rather than a whole bunch of things.

This model of bringing a few key players together who specialize in different areas of business-building has not only proven to be more powerful…

But also more realistic and MORE duplicateable.

team

I’ve been forming partnerships like this, one at a time, for the last few years and I’ve watched our most successful students do the same.

Many of them have six and even seven figure businesses.

The good news is, building a team like this has never been easier thanks to the reach of the internet.

With the exception of a couple people, every single person on my team was someone I met online.

Of course these collaborative partnerships can be people in your downline.

But they don’t have to be.

Many people don’t realize it, but if you have a list and you’re building a relationship with them, you’re sitting on a goldmine of potential team members who could help you explode your business.

Remember:

90% Or More Of The Prospects On Your List Will Never
Be Interested In Your Network Marketing Opportunity

(That’s why it’s so important to offer them additional products like The Renegade Network Marketer and Renegade Professional to help you MONETIZE your marketing efforts)

They could however be VERY interested in becoming your business partner online.

We’re at a unique point in history where interest in building a home based business has NEVER been greater.

It’s just that there are many different ways to make money from home and not everyone is looking to build an MLM.

This does not mean you should limit yourself and miss out on the chance to do business with the rest of these people on your list.

Listen, you may not realize what you hold in your hands but 9 out every 10 businesses in the “real world” don’t know how to do this stuff (marketing!)

Offering someone the chance to partner up with you – someone who has learned how to attract prospects and customers to them – is one of the best opportunities that anyone could ever stumble upon.

Is it necessary to build a team like this to make money?

No.

Should it be part of your long term business plan?

Definitely.

In order to do this, there are a couple things you need to do:

#1. You Need To Create Your Own Unique Value In Order To Attract Star Players

Just like sponsoring people into your opportunity, you need to give people an answer to this question:

“Why should I work with you?”

Some of the best ways to do this are learning how to generate traffic, building a list, and creating content.

These are all things we walk you through click-by-click inside Renegade Professional.

If you’re not a member of Renegade Professional yet, you can get a free 30 day trial when you pick up a copy of The Renegade Network Marketer.

It’s all there waiting for you. All you have to do is follow along with the simple video tutorials.

Here are 12 other ideas for increasing your personal value to make yourself irresistible to prospects and potential business partners:

  • Expertise: What you know
  • Expert status: What you are KNOWN to know (there’s a BIG difference)
  • Skill: What you do
  • Productivity: What you get done
  • Efficiency: HOW you get done what you get done
  • Effectiveness: Opportunity selection and how well you do what you get done
  • Organization/Multiplication: How you get things done by means other than manual labor (for example: creating content all by yourself or having others help you with it)
  • Influence: What you can get others to do
  • Relationships: Who you know
  • Celebrity Status: How well you are known (by your target audience)
  • Reputation: What others know about you
  • Vision: What you see that others don’t

#2. You Need To Develop Leadership And Communication Skills

Most people who build a business online are hoping to avoid this part.

After all, it just doesn’t sound as glamorous as “generating hundreds of leads a day on Google” :-)

You need both, but here’s the distinction:

If all you rely on are systems and formulas, you have a money-maker (a money-maker that could go away at any time).

But when you combine systems with people and leadership you have a real, long-term business.

This is true whether you’re using the internet or not.

What is leadership?

Essentially it’s listening to others, guiding them, and coaching them to help them tap into their full potential.

This could be a 1,000 people or it could be 3 people.

Obviously if you’re going to build a team you need to know how to do this.

But even if you’re NOT building a team - or never intend to - why should you develop these skills?

Because when you learn how to guide and coach others, you also learn how to guide and coach YOURSELF through business (and life).

This is crucial no matter how big you want to grow your income.

Who is teaching these skills online?

Surprisingly no one.

Which is why I encourage you to check out our Coaching Cognition program with Barbara Silva.

It takes most successful business owners years to become a master at networking and communicating effectively
with others.

You can shortcut this learning curve dramatically with Barbara’s instruction.

Barbara is our coach of coaches at Renegade Professional and she’s going to be taking on more students soon.

This is a rare opportunity to learn how the most prominent leaders really increase their influence with others.

(And possibly even become a paid coach inside Renegade Professional)

To find out more about how to participate in this unique program, just head on over to the Renegade Professional News blog .

Study Mike Klingler’s article carefully on how to become more valuable to the people you do business with.

And be sure to watch the videos of others who have used coaching skills to rapidly accelerate their business growth.

To Your Success,

  4. Ann,
Excellent information on the importance of team building and the new model.

I think a lot of people can relate to it and actually see themselves in a specialized partner role. I know I can.

The 12 ways to increase personal value are a good reminder that not only do we need to bring personal value to partnerships, but also that there are many ways we can do that.

From ‘what you know’ all the way to ‘what you see that others don’t’ - this list makes you think a bit.

Barbara Silva can definitely help shortcut the learning curve to networking and effective communication!

  6. I feel like I am bringing up the rear of the many Renegade success stories. Yet when I see the many good projects on the table at Renegade, I am confident that what I see now as the “rear” will in fact be the front in just a few years. I am looking forward to the exciting activities of the next few months!

  7. It’s great to hear your take on the part of the business that comes after the generating of leads. All of the top earners in MLM are masters at developing relationships whether in person or on the phone. I have felt that sometimes there is so much emphasis on generating leads that newbies tend to think they will never actually have to do anything after that!

Anyone that’s built a real group in Network Marketing knows that the work actually starts after the lead has been generated.

I think this is a really positive addition to the online world and I notice that many of the online leaders are moving into this area more now.

    Thanks

  9. Ann, thanks greatly for the info…really valuable. Today more than at any other time markerers must have specialized knowledge and be well trained in communication and leadership skills.

Things around us are changing so rapidly, that for anybody to achieve success on the internet, he/she must be willing to burn the bridge of limitations and become a samurai master marketer.

To be successful, one must have power, presence, and passion in the market.

  10. Hi Ann,
Thanks for this. As a reformed “Lone Ranger” who thought I had to do all things well and do them myself, it’s refreshing to realize that being a coach and leader doesn’t mean being a micro manager.

I still see friends of mine struggle with their organizations. Unless they’re on the phone with them, constantly reminding them of what needs to be done. Ordering on time, recruiting, you name it they keep track of everyone else’s “to do” list as well as their own. They’ve worked themselves into a job, not a business. It’s crazy.

How much better(not to mention way less stressful) to surround yourself with like-minded folks who work as a team. Each of their individual strengths work together to make everyone successful. Being a leader or coach, not a boss, is what makes that happen. I am sooo looking forward to Coaching Cognition opening. Even if someone chooses not to be a paid coach, the skills are priceless. Thanks again.

I couldn’t agree with you more that leadership is necessary even in our own lives, afterall, life as well as business is about loving and serving others, helping others and ourselves to reach our God-given potential. We need to be leaders of our own lives before we can be seen as a leader for someone else! Have a fun and inspiring day!

  18. This article really touched me, Ann, as I have always been used to working alone. I rely on me!

But since being part of the Renegade Professional family, I have really come to appreciate the value of working closely with others who have the same interests, being part of a team with a common goal.

Teaming up with someone else doubles your efforts and your results.

It’s easy to see why this is becoming the new team building model just like old school network marketing is being transformed into the “attraction marketing” model.

And it’s by listening to others who have a broader vision and a clearer picture of the future that we can all benefit by following advice that is based in experience.

  23. Good Morning Ann,

I so enjoyed the Renegade news and updates call on Tuesday. I see an exciting future for everyone. I was reading some of the comments on Renegade and really could relate to the 72 year old lady who found all of the material so interesting she couldn’t stop reading. At 63 I feel the same way – at our age we are so pleased to find interesting and well presented information we literally can’t “put it down”.

I confess I am a bit red-faced over the fact that I can’t locate the survey. So here goes from memory - re the Breakthrough Mentoring Program: so glad to hear it will be offered again. I am in the Home Study Program and I enjoy every minute I spend working through the training but I would like to attend the mentoring program in the future.
Do I enjoy the blog? – I hope everyone realizes that it is another full course of pertinent information and it is offered free to those who care to read it.

I am looking to the coaching program. At this point I have one field of expertise:…63 years living, raising 3 children and wanting to make a difference. I want to finish the RBHS and then I will be looking to the coaching training. Until then it will be exciting to be a part of the Renegade Pro Network. Thank you Ann. Not everyone understands that some of us over 50 enjoy a challenge. You are our favorite mentor and all around great lady because you have continued to “home school” as well as teach all of the bright young people who will shape our future. We salute you.
    Regards,
    Dorothy

  24. Ann, thank you very much.
It’s not all about leads. It’s about leaders. Or to put it another way,
Leads come and leads go. Leaders remain.
In the changing economic winds, it’s important to have solid principles and strong foundations.
Because leaders need strong foundations, I’m glad you took a refresher. There’s too many demands — family, business, time, health, stress — not to.
It seems the highest ROI has to be those ideas that come often unaware, often when we’re offline. Those fertile little seeds can change the world — starting with the world around us. But we can easily lose them because they’re so little. Busy-ness and noise can drown them. We’ve got to nurture them, take time and reflect. Take time to breathe. Time to smell the roses. Every single day. At least a little bit.
Lots of people are running around everywhere in a panic groping for instant fixes and quick answers. They’re missing so much. They’re missing purpose, and meaning, and destiny. They’re missing life.
I hardly post, but since “finding” you 2 years ago this month, you planted some good seeds over here. You’re an answer to my prayer, a solution to years of struggle.
You’re in our prayers. We’d like you to stay healthy, strong, and wise.

We each have something unique to offer and its crazy to think you can be great at evertyhing. A coach can help you identify and leverage your strengths, so you can get off to a great start. As a coach, that’s who I most love to work with — people who are overwhelmed and just trying to find their place. Its wonderful to see people come into their own start moving forward. I am really looking forward to coaching cognition because I do see this as the next step forward in helping me in all areas of my life. As well as being able to help others in my life and also building my business.

Thank you for your wonderful emails and blog. Your email came rather timely for me.

  41. Hi Ann,

I have not checked in with you for a while because business has been really great thanks to both you and Mike!

I love this message you wrote and agree with everything you said here about this.

I could not believe it as I was reading it because I could have wrote it myself for that is what I have discovered as well.

Thanks to you and Mike, I also started up my own coaching business again this past July, but this time it is helping people in building their own businesses instead of joining my Network Marketing business.

I also set it up as a membership site and all of my clients have been great people to work with.

This business is so much fun when you work with people who really do want to show up.

The reason they are so committed is because it was their idea to join me this time instead of me approaching them. I love this way of doing business and so do they!! That’s a good thing! :)

I soon want to launch this into an affiliate product so that people can earn a full time income right away doing what I am teaching them, instead of years down the road as most people find when building a Network Marketing stream of income alone.

Because of the Renegade System introducing me less than two years ago to Attraction Marketing and building more than one stream of income, I will be well over 6 figures this year!

I never could have done this if I went on the Internet myself and tried to learn all that is available to us inside Renegade Professional.

The best part is that I earned an income while building a business, instead of after I built it.

I will always recommend the training you and Mike provide for I don’t see anything out there that even comes close.

The only thing I am doing in my coaching business is helping people get through the training at a much faster rate then they were doing on their own due to different Stages I put together for them to follow.

I found that saving people time, removing their frustration, and getting them committed into seeing results, is a very lucrative way of earning a living.

If you want to see the simple capture page I put up to create this new business, visit http://renegadeprofessionalhelp.com

I would love to have your thoughts. You both have done so much to help most people turn their businesses around and others to build for the very first time.

So I just wanted to stop by and thank you guys again. Keep it coming!!!!

    Living life and loving it!!

  42. Hello Ann

I enjoy reading your news. However, the information in network marketing that is presented in video format it not Deaf friendly and excludes Deaf people who may be interested in learning about network marketing on the Internet. Until this imbalanced in addressed I remain on the sidelines.

  43. Hi, Ann:
    Again, good post.
The point that I really resonate with you in this post is the leadership qualities. I know some people are born to be leader. But I also strongly believe that it can be trained. The very first thing you need is the willingness to learn and to be lead by others. Only when people that are willing to be lead by people will know how to lead people. The other thing is that you must be willing to listen to what people says. People always got the wrong impression that if you are a leader, you need to talk a lot, without listen to what people say, without knowing their problems, and without knowing their needs. This is uni-directional communications. Without all these “info”, there is no way to become a good leader. What we need is bidirectional communications. So, listening, is keep. The other things we need is the passion. You need to be passionate about something. That’s the way to inspire and motivate your followers. So, in my opinions, thats the 3 qualities that you need to possess first in order to be a good leader. Without this “basic” qualities, forget about leading people.
    That’s my 2 cents.

    Regards,
    Rick from Penang, Malaysia.

  47. Hi Ann,

Glad to see you back in the saddle again, hope you enjoyed I’m sure some much needed R&R. It’s so interesting to me how similar building a business online is to building one offline.

Leadership, communication and building relationships seems to be universal across the board. The internet has just made it so much easier because of Global reach one has to access a much broader audience.

I think the SuperGuides program is a perfect example of the new model of specialization in it’s infancy right in our own backyard.

Here you have a group of dedicated people who have formed a tribe all working together developing individual specialized skills with the sole purpose of moving the group forward.

We all can’t be good at everything but as you say in this article By partnering and collaborating with other people “I was able to really focus on becoming good at one or two things, rather than a whole bunch of things”.

Thanks Ann, looking forward to more on this topic from you.

  50. Hi Ann,

As usual you hit the nail on the head. While we do need to know a little bit about everything, so we know what to look for in business partners for outsourcing those aspects we don’t like or do particularly well, we need to learn to specialize in one area so we become an expert and as you should said to be seen as an expert in that area.

The focus group from the RBMP forum is an excellent example of people partnering up to further their businesses. I am very grateful to be a part of this wonderful group.

The one area I’m very interested in is coaching. I am anxiously awaiting to see the details on the program.

  51. Dear Ann,

Your article couldn’t be written at a better time. The team I’m in right now is doing just that! The power of “Team”, comes together when all members get out of their own way, and allow each person to use their skill set to benefit the group. The key, is to find great team mates who can get their ego out of the way and realize we are all here to WIN! Thank you for your powerful concept.
